Training, coaching or mentoring - what's the difference?

Well you might think that whether you are training, coaching or mentoring someone it's probably fair to say it's the same thing. And we might tend to agree - it's all about gaining results, but in this case the small differences make all the difference.

In this blog we have highlighted the differences between training, coaching and mentoring and we hope it gives thought to how the mentor/mentee relationship sets itself apart from the rest.

Training is about transferring skills to someone

Yep - training is surely the first thing you do if you want to get better at something. Having someone train you is basically about learning the basics by adopting and applying knowledge. Getting skilled at something is the offset for getting great and the importance of training can’t be denied. The nature of training is short-termed and the expectations of results are as well. We train people in order to see results and to see skills take form sooner rather than later.

Training is about utilizing someone's talent

Coaching differs from training by adding an element of guidance to the process. Guidance can only be applied effectively when skills are in place. Therefore the transition from training to coaching someone is dependent on that someone's skills and abilities. Coaching is about optimizing and utilizing abilities, skills and talent in the most optimal way. Coaching is transformational and is not as short-term in nature as training.

Mentoring is about utilizing the talent and abilities of the mentee by applying experience.

This is where it gets interesting. More than anything mentoring is about guiding someone and through hard earned experience optimize someone's process of growing and learning. The role of the mentor is to lead the mentee along the beaten track, being able to guide in vital decision making and share important life-lessons.

Remember keep growing and learning!
