Successful startups evolve, react & transform

The nature of a successful startup is to evolve, react and transform along with the surrounding world. As a startup founder your most important role is to steer your startup in a direction that puts your business in the most rewarding market position possible. This takes an equal amount of willingness and foresight to evolve, react and transform your business in accordance to market needs, customer demands and an ever changing marketplace.

Evolve:

If you have a business idea and feel confident that you see a demand, then go with your idea and get started. Don’t try to predict the future too much. Instead start building your own version of it. Your startup is a living agile thing. As your startup grows it will most certainly start changing into something a bit different from what you imagined when you first “set up shop”. Small day to day changes in your management, communication, service or product line can change your business in the long run. Surely listening to your customers, being aware of their needs and evolving your business around this is a sign of a healthy business. But what happens when the market changes and new unforeseen customer demands arise? Then it’s time for you as a business to react.

React:

In a perfect world you foresee all the obstacles and changes just around the corner and make the necessary changes before your competitors. In the real world this rarely happens. But the readiness to react to visible obstacles and changes for you to see is immensely important for every business owner out there. When obstacles arise in the horizon and you realise that some part of your business isn't doing as well as you envisioned or just isn't generating results, then it may very well be the right time to react. Pinpoint what isn't working, go through the numbers and always consider when it's time for a change. If customer needs, market demands or new trends are pushing for a change then brace yourself by getting your team onboard. A common commitment to change is your strongest suit in a transformation of a product, service or a company as a whole.

Transform:

Transforming a business or a startup is at its core about making hard choices. If something or some part of your company isn't working as it should, you should seriously think about shutting that part down for good and be free of the constraints of a suffering service or product. By doing so you can concentrate on what actually works instead of devoting time on a service or product that just ist doing your company a favor. The hard part about transforming is that you have to believe in the transformation and all the benefits that come from it, if you want to convince your employees and investors to go in that new direction. Every major business transformation is hard and it requires a collective team and a common goal, if you want to succeed. Empower your employees through the change so that everybody knows how and why this change needs to happen and knows where the company is heading. As a business leader you will have to be clear about your vision, understanding when it comes to doubts and fears, and be explicit about the value of the transformation.
